Banish Shallow Breathing And Boost Self Esteem!

August 29th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

You know, very often, the manner in which a person holds himself or herself can impact quite noticeably upon their own feelings of self worth and also on how deeply they breathe.

I once read that shallow breathers are shallow people and, while I do not necessarily agree with that statement, I would suggest that shallow breathers are often those who might have low self-esteem and could benefit greatly from a change in body posture and breathing technique.

It is worth bearing in mind that those with what I would term a negative body posture must initially alter the way they hold themselves in order for the breathing to change also.

A negative body posture is easy to see. Shoulders are hunched forwards, eyes down, and dragging one foot after the other. And guess what? Those very same people are shallow breathers due to their posture. Negative begets negative.

Now, how can this easily be remedied and a chain reaction of affirmative actions be initiated instead of the aforementioned scenario?

Firstly, have you ever heard the saying You can never feel down when you are looking up? I have always loved this saying and it holds the key that opens the door to better posture and deep, energising, breathing.

If you feel you often need a better posture just try the following next time you are out walking and see how it positively changes your feelings of optimism and allows deeper breathing.

1.While walking put your chin up away from your chest.

2.Look towards the horizon and make each step you take meaningful. Push strongly off with your feet as you walk.

3.You have now eliminated hunching and opened up your airways more fully. This is key to improving energy, strength, and feeling better!

4.Feel yourself breathing and note whether it is still shallow. If so, consciously make your breaths deeper with the inhalation moving towards your belly button.

5.Do not force or hold the breath. Just focus on combining a better posture with deeper more energising breathing.

Having done this you should feel much better! Following these simple steps will mean you are simultaneously boosting self-esteem and creating better health through your breath.

Follow these simple protocols the next time you are out and you will quickly come to understand the saying You can never feel down when you are looking up!

Clothing and Self Esteem

August 28th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

Clothing has very different impact on our self esteem. The higher is self-esteem the less clothing affects it, but the opposite is also true - the lower is self-esteem the more power cloths and fashion have over a person.

I am not saying that people with high self-esteem do not care about what they are wearing. I am just saying that people with high self-esteem know that they are still the best no matter what they wear. People with high self-esteem choose the clothes they really like and that emphasize their personality, not those that other people want them to wear. People with high self-esteem create fashion, others follow it.

Be confident. If you choose to wear something, wear it because you like it and you feel comfortable in it. You can be a role model everyone will follow, no matter where you live, what you do, and who you are. Dont be afraid to express yourself and people will follow you because you are one of a kind.

What matters most is the way you behave. If you are developing you inner self constantly and persistently, if you try to become a greater, more interesting, kind, balanced, and confident person, people will love you in any clothes.

If your inner world is beautiful then your outer world will be too. If you are developing excellence it is going to show in every part of your life. You are going to wear all those clothes you desire, but you will not be a prisoner of the fashion.

You can not change the outer world first. No matter how expensive your clothes are, if you are unconfident inside, it is going to show.

Dont make mistake on becoming addictive to cloths advertised by media. Become addicted in exploring and enjoying yourself. You can feel comfortable any time you want in any clothes you have if you decide to.

5 Tips to Give Your Self Esteem a Jump Start

August 28th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

Low self-esteem keeps you from enjoying life, doing the things you want to do, and working toward personal goals. Feelings of low self-esteem may be triggered by being treated poorly by someone else recently or in the past, or by your own judgments of yourself. Here are five tips to help improve your self esteem.

Take time to do things you enjoy.

You may be so busy, or feel so badly about yourself, that you spend little or no time doing things you enjoy–things like doing a craft project, exercising, or writing. Begin doing those things that you know will make you feel better about yourselflike going on a diet, beginning an exercise program or keeping your home organized. Make a list of things you enjoy doing. Then do something from that list every day. Add to the list anything new that you discover you enjoy doing.

Do things that make use of your own special talents and abilities.

If you are good with your hands, then make things for yourself, family, and friends. If you are an artist, start to sketch, or draw. Take advantage of opportunities to learn something new or improve your skills. Take a class or go to a seminar.

Pay attention to your own needs and wants.

Listen to what your body, your mind, and your heart are telling you. For instance, if your heart is longing to spend more time with a special friend, do it. If your mind is telling you to listen to your favorite music, or stop thinking bad thoughts about yourself, take those thoughts seriously. Begin today to take good care of yourself.

Dress in clothes that make you feel good about yourself.

When you wear clothes that reflect how you feel, it can make you feel worse. Go through your closet and find the outfits that make you look good. Wear your favorite colors.

Do something nice for another person.

Smile at someone who looks unhappy. Say a few kind words to someone. Help out a friend or family member with an unpleasant chore. Take a meal to a sick friend. Send a friendly card to an acquaintance. Volunteer for a worthy organization.

Building Self Confidence and Self Esteem

August 27th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

As a hypnotherapist I specialise in helping people to develop confidence and self esteem.

Perhaps surprisingly, the people who ask for my help are not shrinking violets and their reasons for wanting to develop enhanced self confidence are not wholly selfish. Consider a few examples. The names have been changed.

John works for a large corporate. Diligent, startlingly intelligent and very ambitious, he found that his ideas were consistently overlooked. This wasnt enough of a catalyst to bring him to my door, however. He eventually grew frustrated, and then angry, that dominant individuals in his company were able to put their own ideas forward with ease. Worst of all, some of these ideas, he felt, were positively damaging, but he just couldnt make his opposition count. All his intelligence counted for little in his testosterone-fuelled working environment. It had reached the point where he felt that he should resign and start again with a fresh company; he simply didnt feel that he was adding any real value. A man of great integrity, John would rather leave than tacitly support such a wrong-headed and unintelligent approach to business.

John stayed. We worked together to identify his confidence profile, which was very unusual — represented by less than 1% of the population. Through work on his stage presence and physical presence, we were able to significantly improve Johns effectiveness in being taken seriously, to the extent where he has recently broken through into senior management.

Jenny came to me because she was lonely. A brief marriage hadnt worked out, and she was finding serial dating to be a frustrating activity. Jenny had come to realise that she wasnt moving out of her comfort zone, either socially or at work. She feared becoming enclosed, locked into a safe routine which wouldnt threaten her, but wouldnt take her life forward either.

Jennys confidence profile was almost the inverse of Johns. Where he had masses of peer independence, Jenny had almost none, which meant that she was hugely dependent on the good opinion of others. She needed lots of reassurance, and had very little faith in her own ability or judgement.

The approach with Jenny was to strengthen her peer independence — her ability to trust in her own judgement, independent of the views of others - and to build up her self esteem. She has now met somebody, changed her job and moved house — all in the space of a year!

What these case studies illustrate is the complex nature of self confidence. It isnt like height or weight; you cant read off a single value which describes a person. Confidence is complex and to develop, we need to understand our confidence profile. I have subsequently made my confidence profile questionnaire available through the Confidence Club website http://www.confidenceclub.net

This has enabled me to build up an even larger database of confidence profiles, and allows people from all over the world to identify their particular areas for improvement.

How Do I Love Myself?

August 27th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

We know that we should love our self, but sometimes were not sure how to go about it. Here is a little checklist for you to get you started.

Begin by checking to see if your immediate physical needs are met at this moment. Do you need healthy food? Are you tired? Do you need sleep? Part of loving yourself is seeing to your needs sensibly. Sometimes we get in a bad mood simply because were over-tired or havent eaten in a while or have made poor food choices. If you need sleep or a good meal, see to that first.

How are you feeling? Do you need to talk to someone? Then dont just sit there, call someone. Talk to them about anything, it doesnt have to be about important things. Do you need to shift your thoughts away from unhappy thoughts or self criticism? Then do that. Get involved in some work or a project, put on happy music, do something enjoyable, read something uplifting, find friends and tell them you need to have some fun, but find some way to shift your thoughts away from sadness. Make it a habit to say encouraging, kind words to yourself.

When your physical needs are met and you are feeling okay, then its time to think long term if your needs are being met. Do you have enough income that you are financially stable? If not, then come up with a plan to change this, and work on it until you have some financial security. Save money to get you through emergencies, temporary unemployment, and for retirement. Always have some money that only you can get to.

What about your emotional needs? Are you in a loving relationship? Wonderful. Are you in a relationship that makes you unhappy? If you are in a relationship that isnt good for you, that makes you feel bad about yourself, or that makes you unhappy, you want to show yourself love by ending the relationship. Are you lonely? Then make friends or start dating.

What about your health? Do you show yourself love by taking care of your body? Often we diet for looks, but what is most loving is to take care of your health. Sometimes health and losing weight overlap, but sometimes people diet and do not help their health or even harm it. It is loving to see to your health through healthy eating, exercise, keeping a sensible weight, getting enough sleep, avoiding cigarettes and other health risks, and getting regular medical care.

After all of these things, there is still more! If you are taking care of your needs, both in this moment and in the future, that is wonderful! But you can also show love “just because.” Much like a loving parent would do, speak nicely to yourself. Maybe do something nice for yourself now, “just because.” You dont have to have a need to be loving to yourself.

Self Esteem, Community Service and Empowerment - Part 1 of 2

August 26th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

Attention teachers! Challenge students to use their uniqueness as a contribution to make a positive difference in our world through community service and empower the young. Through participation in school-created community service programs, students elevate their social consciousness to social responsibility as defined in the Bill of Responsibilities: to give sympathy, to understand and help others; to respect the rights and beliefs of others. Students also participate in the group process of cooperative learning, conflict resolution, critical thinking and problem solving by creating and organizing community service projects. Students enhance self esteem through experience. Consequently, self esteem becomes earned esteem.

Keys for Success

From my personal experience of creating and directing a successful community service program for seventeen years, here are some keys for success:

– Community service programs that enhance self esteem are experiential. Self esteem will always be enhanced with the experience of serving, helping and leading.

– Allow community service to be an innate response to needs. Ask for student volunteers. Criteria for the program could be students who possess an attitude of acceptance and tolerance toward others and who have a commitment and respect toward the environment.

– A community service program could have two components. One component of the program could be integrated into the school day. Also, there could also be an after-school component of the program that would involve a weekly commitment by students for a specified number of months.

A complete description of the two components of a successful community service program can be found in part 2 of this article.

– Longevity will determines the success of the program.

Be prepared for growth with this program because everyone can serve; there is no need to exclude anyone.

Actual student responses to the program have included: “I feel listened to.” “Thank you for believing in me.” “I know that I can make a difference in our world.” When students truly know and feel that they can make a difference in our world with their actions, they are empowered. Community service programs allow students to work heart-first and the energy of young people will change the world. The members of your student activists will become heroes for all adults involved with your community service program.

Nurture Self-Pride In Yourself In 8 Simple Steps!

August 26th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

Self-pride is your sense of your own value or worth as a person. It is how much you like, accept, approve, and respect yourself. You can recognize yourself as worthy and capable of loving and being loved. Or, your self-pride can be the biggest stumbling block to living the successful, happy life you want to live. Self-pride effects how you act in every situation, what you say and do, and how your feel about yourself. It is a continuous influence on your perception of life.

Imagine that you arrive into the world with an inner ball of white light. This light lives inside of you providing warmth and love, and offering meaning to your life. As you go through each day, the choices you make effects this white ball. If you make decisions with a favorable attitude towards yourself, nurturing your own strengths, confidence, and body, your core of white light will grow ever more radiant. Your inner beauty, intuition, creativity, and wisdom expand and you feel more empowered. If however, you make decisions with an unfavorable attitude towards yourself, demeaning your own talents, efforts, and body, your white light will fade. As a result, you will feel loneliness, anxiety, resentment, irritability, or depression.

The pride you have within yourself determines your success or failure in everything. Contemplate for a moment what you really think about yourself. Take a look in the mirror and notice your self chatter. Catch yourself in a mistake of some sort and become conscious of your internal dialog. Notice the type of conversation that goes through your head when you reach an obstacle, have a setback, or are unable to achieve your goals. Sadly, many of us have deep feelings that who we are is flawed, unlovable, or unacceptable. Every mistake, setback, or evidence of an imperfect body is proof that we do not deserve to love ourselves, or to be loved.

Do you like you? Are you able to think of yourself as one who has many desirable qualities and attributes, or do you dwell on your perceived flaws and failures? Your beliefs help to create your experience of every situation. You create your attitude, your body, and your world for better or for worse.

If you strongly believe:

you do not like yourself,

you are not a good human being,

you do not deserve happiness,

the worst will always happen,

you never do anything right

that success will take too long or be too much work,

or that you are inadequate in any way,

you will create this reality for yourself. Your thoughts and beliefs about yourself true or false are the power that create your life experience.

If you have accepted an idea of inferiority concerning your looks, your attributes, or your ability to be successful, stop and rethink your position. This type of negative thinking will not help you achieve a happy life. If you want to achieve happiness, success, or inner peace, decide to put your energy into raising your self-pride. Instead of being your own worst enemy, you can be your own best friend. Find ways to strengthen your belief that you are already quite extraordinary. Do not wait for the outcome of a goal or the end result of weight loss. Begin, right now, today, to cultivate your belief in yourself.

Ironically, it is when you believe in yourself and gain positive self-pride (exactly the way you are right now) that you are far more likely to achieve the goals and dreams that you desire. Self-pride means appreciating your own worth and importance, having the character to be accountable for yourself, and the ability to act responsibly toward creating a great life for your self.

Tremendous potential lies within you, waiting to be discovered and used. You may choose to blame yourself and feel guilty because of your mistakes and shortcomings. Or you may choose to affirm yourself because of all your good qualities. Every decision you make either helps awaken the positive core light within your self or further blocks its expression. Make the choice to focus on the positive self, in yourself and others.

These empowering 10 tips will help you develop a strong, enduring sense of self-pride that will help you create a life that you will love living:

1. People with poor self-esteem often fail to give themselves enough time and space. So find 10 minutes every day to be alone and to just sit and do nothing. Build quiet time into your schedule, perhaps before everyone else gets up out of bed, during a midmorning break, or after the kids are asleep. Quiet time is when you shut out as much outside interference as possible. You may take a gentle walk, or simply be still and breathe. During this 10 minutes, allow yourself to feel peaceful and happy. Enjoy this quiet time. It is yours - and yours alone. And you deserve it. Setting aside 10 minutes of quite time everyday is a very caring thing to do for your mind, body, and emotional life.

2. One of the most common ways to raise your self-esteem is to expand your comfort zone by taking a risk and being successful doing so. Listen to what your body, mind, and spirit are telling you. Follow the signs of excitement and choose a personally meaningful goal, life direction, or dream that you are willing to put time, effort, and personal energy into. Deciding to choose a meaningful life direction provides value to your time, and offers meaning to your life. Choose something and follow through. Celebrate your efforts, and praise your successes. With time, your words of support will allow your inner white light to expand and fill you with warmth and self-appreciation.

3. Take very good care of yourself. Instead of behaving well, or doing the right thing, listen to your body and treat yourself with love. Listen inwardly and eat foods that make you feel more alive, before and after eating them. Engage in activity that boosts your endorphins and self-esteem. This is not the same as exercising to lose weight. Instead, move your body because your butt says you have been sitting on your office chair for far too long, or your legs needs to stretch, or your lungs are crying out for some fresh air and sunshine.

4. Encourage yourself to be a creative, imaginative problem solver. Instead of falling into overwhelm, worrying, or giving up when you meet adversity, ask your inner creative self to come up with an optimistic solution. Wait for the creative solution to arrive.

5. Accept responsibility for your actions, and accept the consequences of your actions. You are an adult, and allowed to make choices. Naturally, all choices have consequences. You get to decide if you like the outcomes of your choices. You are not a good boy or girl based on undesirable outcomes, rather you are an empowered person capable of learning from your experiences. Use your wisdom to make new self-supportive decisions.

6. Encourage yourself through new experiences with I believe in me messages. Trust that as long as you put effort toward your desired outcome, you will achieve success. You may not know when success will arrive, or exactly how you will achieve it. However, continue to pump belief into what you declare that you deserve in your lifetime, and with time and action you will be able to achieve it.

7. Look to the future with excitement, a sense of adventure and optimism. Recognize yourself as a person worthy of success, and spend time visualizing your success. Decide to focus on specific dreams, aspirations, and hopes for the future. Take some sort of action everyday that helps to increase your excitement for living.

8. Allow yourself to make mistakes. Understand that problems, conflicts, and failures are a part of life. When you make mistakes, smile and hug yourself. Provide yourself with the comfort your really need. Let yourself know this world is a safe place if you choose to make it a safe place. You can learn to encourage and support yourself through the good times and especially the bad times. Love that you are overcoming fear and attempting something new no matter what the outcome.
When an occasional failure is experienced get up, dust yourself off, access the wisdom gained, believe in yourself, and begin again.

Action Step:

Move up your practice of raising your self-pride to front and center. For the next week, plan to find daily opportunities to say I am very proud of you! Develop a journal and every day write down five statements of self-appreciation. Write with feeling. Be smiling. Be amazed. Write down, I am VERY proud of myself because I — - —–! Put it in a convenient place your refrigerator, computer monitor, office desk, or the table beside your bed. Read it over to yourself at least several times a day to keep reminding yourself of how great you are!

4 Quick Tips to Improve Your Self Confidence

August 25th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

Self confidence is akin to a tool. It provides you with a sense of certainty, and helps you to manage your fears. Self confidence is usually built up through a history of positive experiences, and with an improved sense of self confidence you will find that your esteem and mental state will be greatly improved as well.

If you find yourself unable to summon up courage to voice your own opinion, or to tell someone to back off when you need to, then it is probably a sign that you need to improve your self confidence. Here are 4 easy tips that will help you do just that.

Tip #1: Set Goals

The first step in gaining self confidence is to set realistic and achievable goals for yourself. These goals should not be unachievable nor out of reach, but should be a challenge for you so that you can improve. No goal is too small, as every little step counts and works towards achieving the next bigger goal. With set goals, you will be able to push yourself to exceed your comfort zone, and it will give you something concrete to work towards.

Tip #2: Control your Feelings

Feelings are strong emotions that can have a big impact on our self confidence. Emotions associated with fear, anxiety or distrust can undermine our self esteem, whilst others like happiness and excitement can increase our self confidence. By being able to control your emotions so that you do not fall prey to negative emotions, you will be able to project positive emotions. This makes it easier for you to act and appear more confident.

Tip #3: Have a Mentor

Pick someone that you trust who will be able to give you the type of guidance that you are looking for. Make sure that it is someone who will not be afraid to push you to achieve your goals, and hold you accountable if you are not reaching them. It can be a friend or a family member, or a professional even.

Tip #4: Take Action

Do not allow yourself to procrastinate as you need to take active steps in order to build confidence. It is often a vicious cycle if you insist on waiting for your confidence to improve first before taking action to help you grow your self-confidence. Based on the goals that you have set for yourself, set aside an hour or so everyday to work on doing activities that will help you to achieve those targets.

Stop yourself from worrying about being unprepared, or not confident enough to approach new activities. Whilst it is normal to worry, it is important that you do not do so excessively. There are many possibilities open to you, and you need to be receptive to developing your own self-confidence.

How To Stand Out As A Person Of Excellence!

August 25th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

Many of us struggle with the problem of our own shyness. This problem often keeps us from being a part of our world. We want to make a visible difference but we do not do it. In addition to shyness, we struggle with fears of rejection, low self-esteem, feelings of unworthiness and being overly self conscious. All of these factors keep us from showing up in our world.

We tell ourselves that if we could just change our weak points then we could make a difference. If only we had more money, a college degree, better looks, more experience, etc..then we could let the world know about us. Maybe there are only a couple of areas which could use some changing. Regardless, we tell ourselves these things and then we justify reasons why we cannot or do not have them.

If we continue to hide, then we are sure to lose out on all the good things life as to offer. When we do not take the risk to become more involved we are denying ourselves the opportunity to grow. This leaves us feeling afraid, immature, and mistrusting. The longer we continue this pattern of avoidance the smaller our world becomes because we will eventually become comfortable with fewer and fewer situations.

So whether we are aware of it or not, we come across opportunities to grow on a daily basis. In order to make an impact we have to get started with what we have. Stop waiting for this, this and this to happen before we begin. Maybe we are already visible to some degree. If this is the case then we have to challenge ourselves to become even more visible. Only the individual knows the secret to what keeps them from letting others know them. What is it that is keeping you from letting others know you?

By making a visible statement we are telling others that we feel good about who we are and were not afraid to let them know us. This challenge will require courage. Courage comes from when we are afraid to do something but we do it anyway because we know it is for our own good. This new way of presenting ourselves will get easier with time. People will know us as individuals with integrity and they will respect us for it.

Just remember, we grow as individuals when we take risks to become our best selves. Feelings of great happiness will come from our efforts because we will know that we are taking control of our personal power.

Do You Possess A Positive Self Image?

August 25th, 2008 by admin in Self Esteem

If you can improve your self image you will be able to improve your business, relationship or anything else. How you see and feel about yourself is the aspect to your success and happiness in life. You can reach any of your goals with the right tools; however if you do not possess a positive self image; your subconscious will keep you from reaching your goals. You must learn how to keep your self image positive if you want to become successful in life.

Most people do not even think about their self image. If you ever see someone who thinks very highly of themselves; people tend to think that person is conceited or selfish. However that person who does possess a positive self image is most likely to have more success than someone who does not think they themselves are able to conquer anything. The self image is your true opinion of yourself; how you see yourself from the inside out. Most people never work on their self image. However if you ask almost anyone; they would never dare to leave the house without showering, shaving, doing their hair…or taking care of their personal hygiene. They are afraid they would not look good. If you take the time to take care of your outside appearance; why would you not take care of your self image? The self image is the most important thing you can work on; if you disregard; you can not expect to achieve anything if you do not possess a positive self image.

The first thing you can do to help you find out what kind of thoughts you have about yourself is to write all the negative thoughts you have ever thought on paper. For example: “I can not do that, I will never lose weight, I am not good enough, I am not pretty enough,” the list could keep going on and on. After you finish doing that you write another list about things that you have said about yourself that are positive. For example: “I always finish what I start, I am helpful to others, I am a great listener, I care about others”..etc. Make this list longer than the list you made with the negative statements.

Keep this positive list with you at all times. As you continue to read it everyday and visualize yourself doing and being everything you have written down on this list; your brain will begin to accept the information as being true. As you go to bed in the evening spend at least 5-10 minutes playing the movies of the new you in your mind. You may be thinner, have the home you always wanted, be working at home making more money than what you currently are, and have a new fantastic relationship. As you continue to focus on these images your brain does not know the difference between what is real and what is just a vividly played imagination. You will eventually turn the desired images into reality.

As you continue seeing yourself with what you want to be; your self image will improve and you can will notice that these things are not impossible for you to achieve.
