To a person with depression, it is an intimidating mission to think of conquering it. Luckily there are a number of ways by which a person can try to overcome depression. As individuals we are responsible for our thoughts (and to a certain extent) control our thoughts and the direction of our thinking. Normal thoughts and feelings can be given a direction with a certain amount of labor and effort.
To start with, check and obtain information on the medications you are taking. Confirm from your doctor if your medications are causing depression. A number of medications such as tranquilizers, hypertension medicines, and hormonal medicines induce depression. Some anti-inflammatory or anti-infection drugs also induce depression. In most cases, merely stopping the medication will help a lot.
In addition to this, there are a number of ways by which it is easy to conquer depression. When people are diagnosed for depression, they usually accept the diagnosis and do not want to do anything about it. They also want every body else to accept it and leave them on their own, labeling themselves as such to avoid complications in their lives.
I am not blaming any body for their behavior. I know that the above statement sounds unprofessional. But I simply want you all to know this that I have gone through all that you are going through now. And it was worse than anyone can imagine. But among all this, what I have learnt is that it is easy to overcome depression or it is easy to begin the course of being free of depression.
Lately a new trend is observed among the patients of depression. As more and more patients are getting treated, they are opting for medications and not bothering about therapy. This is because the treatments are being done by primary care physicians and not professionals. These physicians just give prescription drugs like anti-depressants, anti-anxiety medications without recommending complementary therapy.
This has resulted in an increase in the percentage of depressed people who are only on prescription drugs. Statistics reveal that in 1997, there were 80% of depressed people on prescription only, while in a decade back only 45% of them were on prescription medication only. In this period there were about 70% to 60% individuals who were receiving psychotherapy in addition to medications.
This does not mean that antidepressant medications are ineffective. A majority of them are very efficient in treating depression. But the fact remains that they do not address to the problem absolutely. Treatment of depression encompasses treating the lifestyle and habits of the individual.
Individuals relying only on medication might not get the benefits of psychosocial therapy. This therapy educates patients on living a better and stress free life, and also ways to cope with the strains and stresses of every day life. Studies have also revealed that in certain cases, psychotherapy has proven to be more beneficial than medications. When given by specialists, psychosocial therapy is as beneficial as the prescription medications, as it imparts far reaching benefits to the depressed person. A research in 2003 revealed that psychosocial therapy was more efficient in treating those individuals who had endured early childhood distress.
This same study also noted that medication along with psychosocial therapy has been more effective in treating depression than either of those treatments. Persons who are too depressed need to be prescribed medications and only then they can get the advantage from psycho-social therapy.

If you have a sound sense of purpose for your life, it is more difficult for you to find yourself trapped by depression the hustle and bustle of today’s workplace. The way to have this sound sense of purpose is to have an understanding of priorities, set your priorities, and maintain your priorities by setting reasonable life goals.
Depression is a state of unhappiness and hopelessness. With depression, comes feelings of dejection, lack of energy, sleeplessness, and, sometimes, suicidal tendencies. Depression is a trap that can catch you in two different ways. First, it can wear on you when you do not know what your sense of purpose is. Second, when you have a purpose, but, for whatever reason, you have lost focus regarding your purpose in life.
When you do not know what your sense of purpose in life you have no direction for your life. At best this will leave you with feelings of uncertainty and at worst it will leave you with feelings of hopelessness. It is important that you pray about your purpose in life. That you seek out your personal gifts or talents and then develop them. As you both develop your skills and seek God’s will, God will point you towards your niche in life. It is also important to set your priorities of God first, then your spouse & family, your job, your personal ministry, etc. This will help to keep you focused as you carry out God’s purpose for your life.
When we lose focus in our lives, it is usually because we have, in some way, disregarded our priorities. God needs to be first among our priorities. His word says we are to love God with all of our heart and all of our might.
Our next priority should be our spouse (or if your single, your family). In both words and action, we need to keep them readily aware that they are loved, cherished and important. We most make “quality” time to pour ourselves into our spouse and our children lives.
Next should be our jobs. Many would think that our personal ministry would come next, but that is not so. Our job is our means to support God’s house with tithes/offerings and to support our families. We should do our jobs as if we are working for God himself. That means always seeking to personally grow and develop your talents.
Lastly you should find a place in God’s house to serve others and give of yourself. When you open yourself to serve others, God will give you direction as to where to serve. You will get more out of it than you ever put into serving others.
There are forces in this world that will affect your thinking. Once this is done, Satan will seek to change your focus. If he can change your focus, he can affect your emotions. No longer are you pursuing your purpose through your priorities. The further and further you move from your purpose, the more it will bring negative emotions to surface. The negative emotions expose you to the abrasive nature of unhappiness and hopelessness. As unhappiness and hopelessness wear away at you, you begin to lose energy and the ability to find peace - to be at rest.
This is the trap of depression and it is something that many of us can slide into. Sometimes it’s a slow slide and sometimes it is a rapid slide into depression, but if unchanged it can have a devastating effect upon not only you, but those who are close to you.
So ask God for direction in your life. There is no woman or man, which God has not given a gift or talents to. You need to discover the marvelous talents he has given you. Then develop and grow them with a personal coach or mentor. Then set your priorities and life goals so that you have a positive focus for your life. There is a saying, “…it is hard to stop a good man that keeps on coming.” Ladies - men, it is going to be hard to stop you if you maintain your purpose and priorities. If you are feeling lost, then set yourself free by setting priorities and goals for yourself. After doing so, stick with your priorities - your goals and you will find that you have escaped the trap of depression. Maintaining your focus with Godly purposes and priorities will greatly aid you in avoiding the snare of depression.

There are many things that happen within the body when depression occurs. It is not only a feeling, but a disease that is often caused by an imbalance of chemicals within the brain. Is it avoidable? Is there a way to cure depression? It is important to understand that depression is not caused by feeling bad. Instead, depression causes the bad moods, the uneasy feelings, and the worries. For that reason, anyone who is dealing with depression, need to go to their doctor and begin treatments.
For many, treating depression will give them their life back. Through the use of medication and therapy, depression can be relieved and it may or may not return down the road. No matter what has caused the depression in you or your loved one, you will not be able to cure depression on your own. You can find ways to lessen the effects on your body and mind through positive energy and forcing yourself to work through it.
The question of whether or not depression can be overcome can be answered by any of the thousands that have worked through their depression through the use of medications and therapy. Again, you can not fight depression on your own; you need others to help you get through it. In order to learn more about depression, avoiding it, and getting through it, visit websites like www.avoiddepression.com. One of the saddest things about depression is the lingering myth that it is mostly a female disorder. So, reported The Star of Johannesburg. This lingering myth however, may be starting to fade as more and more health professionals begin to recognize the difference between depression in men and women. According to the South African edition of Readers Digest, sadness does not necessarily accompany depression in males.
What are the different signs of depression in the sexes? And given the convoluted attributes of clinical depression, should we bother defining depression at all? JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) reported, in women depression has a notably different constellation of symptoms than in men. Depression in men is often characterized by anger, fatigue, irritability, reduction in work performance, and a tendency to isolate himself from his friends and loved ones. Also, depression remains hidden in males because they visit health professionals less often than women do.
It is not surprising that males are more hesitant to discuss their problems with their doctor, and less likely to articulate emotional concerns adequately. Females are better able to express to their health professional their feelings, and doctors are more familiar with symptoms of depression that are common in women.
Regardless of gender, however, depression is on the rise worldwide and people need education on what symptoms to look for in themselves and their families. All persons — males and females experience sadness, sullenness, anxiety, stress, even fatigue or anger at times, but intensity and duration are good indicators that professional help be sought.
One form of depression is burnout. Burnout has no precise medical definition, explains Fortune magazine, the most commonly accepted symptoms include fatigue, low morale, absenteeism, increased health problems, and drug or alcohol abuse. These, of course can be underlying symptoms of other conditions, but two strong indicators that one is suffering from burnout are prolonged anger and carelessness.
Generally, victims of burnout are neither maladjusted nor emotionally disturbed, and furthermore they often care deeply about their performance and the company they work for.
How do you know if you are a candidate for burnout? Well, if you are struggling to survive fierce competition at work or toiling to climb the corporate ladder - youre a candidate. If you work long and hard trying to take full control of a project or position youre a candidate. If you work nonstop, exhibit unwavering devotion, and are not achieving the results you desire you are a candidate.
Home-phobia syndrome is another growing form of depression that is sending middle-aged workers to the doctor. Sufferers are described as worn-out employees who linger around coffee shops and bars after work.
Eventually, those suffering from this syndrome stop going home entirely. Some fear returning home because their spouses are unsympathetic to their problem. Others have been working too hard and lost the ability to adjust to the outside world, even in many cases to their own family, says Dr. Toru Sekiya, a Japanese expert in workplace psychiatry.
A similar form of this has been styled holiday neurosis. The key symptom here is irritation on holidays from not doing anything. These work devotees are driven by compulsion to work, and are unable to find peace of mind on days off. If you find yourself pacing around the house like a caged animal, or find relief on Monday when it is time to go off to the office, you may be a sufferer.
Seasonal Affected Disorder or SAD is an often-overlooked form of depression. This has also been labeled winter depression. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) says SAD occurs when there is either a lack or excess of the hormone melatonin in the sufferers body. (Recently, researchers have suggested that the issue may not be the level of melatonin in the body, but how a lack of light might disrupt the production cycle of melatonin.) The solution to this form of depression may simply be sitting under a bright lamp.
While myths still linger regarding depression, and the forecast calls for more of it, experts continue to delve deeper into the subject. In the meantime there are common sense methods that offer some relief. Balance is key. Balance at work, at home, in your personal goals and relationships. Laughter, exercise, proper sleep and nutrition are the fundamentals of healthy living. If the blues continue to overshadow your daily life, a visit to a healthcare professional made be wise.

Angelina Jolie was on Inside the Actors Studio last year and she mentioned that when she was younger and life got too painful for her, she used to cut herself. This remark was made by her almost in passing. It wasnt questioned by host James Lipton. He didnt ask her why or what she meant by cutting herself. Yet cutting, burning and other forms of self-injury are very serious issues around the world.
At any given time, one percent of the population is using or has used self-inflicted physical injury as a means of coping with an overwhelming situation or feeling, according to the American Self-Harm Information Clearinghouse. Self-injurers come from all walks of life; they are from every socio-economic group, from a diverse range of ethnicities and countries, from any sexual persuasion, from any level of education. Self-injurers can also be of any age and gender. The main thing they have in common is that they cut, self-abuse or self-mutilate in an effort to relieve themselves from pain or distress. And as the ASHIC website points out, Self-mutilation implies falsely that the primary intent is to mark or maim the body, and in most cases this isnt so.
People start to self-injure for a variety reasons. They may have a biological predisposition to hurt themselves or a lack of experience dealing with strong emotions. Or they may have done somethingpicked at their skin, bit themselves or hit a wallduring a time of stress and realized that this action released some pent-up negative feelings. Because of this one-time, quick relief, the person may start to repeat the action in the middle of the next tense episode or the next time she needs to alter her mood. Preteens or teens who start this behavior may continue it for a long time, by wearing covering clothing or by always offering excuses as to how the injury happened, before someone realizes what they are doing.
If you are a teacher, a parent or a friend of a self-injurer, dont get angry or tell the person what they are doing is stupid. You need to understand why the person feels the compulsion to do the behavior. What triggers his actions? Is something horrible going on in his life that needs to be addressed? Is he in an abusive situation or living in a place where emotional expression is forbidden or invalidated? Other coping mechanisms will need to be learned, especially if the person will have to continue being in the stressful situation. Help for self-injurers usually involves professional therapy. But self-injury, like any learned, addictive behavior, usually cannot be overcome by forced treatment or forced hospitalization; the self-injurer has to want help.
Some treatments use medications (mood enhancers, anti-depressants, anxiety calmers) to ease the urge to self-harm. Therapy and medicinal combination can be done on an inpatient basis with an understanding hospital staff, or on an outpatient basis with a psychiatrist or other medical professional.
The most important thing for you as a friend, a teacher or a family member of a self-injurer is to try not be frightened, isolated or feel helpless (things that the self-injurer may be feeling too). Know that support groups (in person and online) exist for self-injurers and their loved ones. Educate yourself about self-injury.
Visit LifeSigns website at http://www.selfharm.org, Self Injurers Anonymous at http://www.selfinjurers.com and Showing Our Scars at http://www.showingourscars.org for more information. Share the information you find with the self-injurer to let her know you understand, that you arent being judgmental and offer to help in any way you can.
Self-injury can be stopped, with the right tools. Angelia Jolie is just one success story of that.
Jill L. Ferguson is a professor, editor, writer, public speaker and the author of the novel Sometimes Art Can’t Save You (published by In Your Face Ink, http://www.inyourfaceink.com) about a self-injuring teenage artist who struggles one summer to balance painting, friendship, sex, travel and family issues while still maintaining her health and sanity.

Postpartum or postnatal depression is a complex mix of physical, emotional, and behavioral changes that occur in a mother after giving birth. Depression may occur in women at during the pregnancy or after the delivery of the child.
Postpartum depression occurs after delivery because of the hormonal changes in a woman’s body. About 70-80% of woman experience this, and it may appear within days of delivery or within a year.
During pregnancy, the levels of two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, rise greatly. In the first 24 hours after childbirth, these rapidly drop back to their normal non-pregnant levels. Researchers think that this fast change in hormone levels may trigger depression, just as smaller changes in hormones can affect a woman’s moods before the menstrual cycle. Also, drops in the levels of thyroid hormones which helps to regulate metabolism is responsible for prompting depression.
The amount of blood in the body, the blood pressure, the immune system and metabolism all change after giving birth. These changes affect how one feels physically and emotionally, causing fatigue or mood swings. There is no exact cause known for depression after childbirth, but it’s likely that physical, emotional and lifestyle factors all play a role.
Often, the depression is not recognized or treated, because some normal pregnancy changes cause similar symptoms and are happening at the same time. Tiredness, problems sleeping, stronger emotional reactions, and changes in body weight occur during and after pregnancy. But these symptoms may also be signs of depression.
The major causes include a family history of depression or substance abuse, little support from family and friends, anxiety about the fetus, problems with a previous pregnancy or birth, marital or financial problems, young age of mother, feeling tiredness after delivery, broken sleep patterns, feeling less attractive, and doubting one’s ability to be a good mother.
Sometimes, women think they have to be the perfect “super mom,” which can add stress. Having to stay home or indoors for longer periods of time and having less time to spend with one?s husband or partner and loved ones also results in depression.
There is a difference between baby blues and postpartum depression. Baby blues can happen in the days right after childbirth and normally go away within a few days to a week, whereas postpartum depression can happen anytime within the first year after childbirth and needs to be treated by a doctor.
Talk therapies and anti-depressant medicines are the best ways to overcome and avoid this depression. Taking a nap when the baby does, asking for help from family members and friends, and talking with other moms definitely helps. Keeping a diary to note down emotions and feelings also works as a vent.

Postpartum Depression
Postpartum depression or peripartum depression occurs after a woman gives birth. Within a few hours of giving birth the amount of the two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, return to their pre pregnancy levels. Many researchers feel that this drop in hormone levels, much like the smaller changes in hormone levels can affect a womans mood j...

The ability to smile is a gift to humans. It not only fills a mood of happiness and positive energy into one’s own soul, but also spreads a feeling of good will, friendship, love, and care for the others to perceive, who happens to be facing you or to whom you are smiling at.
Further, a heartening smile is a non-verbal symbol of acceptance, which is very crucial in our social lives, and a gesture that personifies your confidence, eagerness, aptitude, and willingness to perform your duties with full heart. Have you ever heard an HR personnel lecturing on interview skills telling the candidates not to smile at the interviewer before accepting his invitation to take the seat? Or have you ever met a receptionist attending to your queries with a tight lip?
In fact, not! No friendly interaction could do away with a broad smile on either of the participant’s faces. This is a universal truth in fact, but restated by our motivation and success-type of gurus.
So, it is quite obvious why it is important to learn to smile, even in times when you do not feel to smile at all, but to grin or gnaw. Here are top 5 reasons as to why you should smile more often than how you are today. If you are confident enough that you are smiling very often, please skip this article; it is meant for those poor souls who have not still fathomed the importance of a cheek-to-cheek smile.
a) As mentioned earlier, a full hearted smile sets the tone for the rest of the day. It makes one feel good and better and the positive energy a smile brings into oneself is both self perpetuating and infectious.
b) A heartening smile makes others also feel welcomed to come and talk to you.
c) A smile originating from your inner self is a good enough stress buster. It triggers your hormone production, thus soothing the building tension in you.
d) A smile not only peps up your appearance, but it also plays a major role in toning up your facial muscles. Remember, smiling is a subtle exercise in itself.
e) Finally, a smile does not cost you anything. And it returns in lot, the results being emotional, social, and biological.
Our world is full of sad people, with long faces. Let you also do not add to their already long ranks. Smile yourself into a new life and let others also follow suit. So, next morning, when you get up, make sure that there is a broad smile originating on your lips. Make it a habit to smile and soon you will realize how substantially this little change can transform your life!

So many things cause depression, but hormones are one of the leading reasons why someone will become depressed. You will find that you may become depressed from a hormonal change. This is why so many women will become depressed later on in the their life. When you are going through the change of life, your moods and feelings are all confusing, but then when you go through the change in life later it still has an effect on you moods and mental health.
You will find that you might be depressed because you feel like you have no purpose. The only thing is that you cannot look at the change as not being able to do something anymore, but changing for the better. You do not have to worry about having products at that time of the month and you don’t have to worry about all the discomforts of having a menstrual cycle. The only thing is that you have to keep your hormone levels up when going through the change or you will develop a depression.
There are so many ways that you can increase your hormones during this difficult time. You can take some of the over the counter drugs that will help you keep your estrogen levels up. You may also want to consider seeing a doctor so that you can go into the change without having to deal with depression. However, you may also want to consider talking to a therapist too.
This is because most women do not feel that they are worthy of life after the change. They will also feel like they have lost their youth and become afraid of things like dying. When you consult a doctor, they will be able to help you through your insecurities so that you can beat your depression.
For those who are depressed because they feel useful, you may want to consider seeking some professional help so that you do not end up in a full-blown depression. You will want to make sure that you take care of yourself as well. If you learn how to eat healthy and to excise or stay active, you will be able to fight the depression.
Also if you know anyone who is dealing with serious medical issues you may want to consult their doctor for depression. You will want to take this serious so that you don’t end up losing a parent to suicide or self-inflicted wounds. It is very common for the elderly to lose sight of life when they end up being diagnosed for serious ailments. You will want to make sure that you care for your elderly loved ones very carefully so that they can avoid getting a serious case of depression that may hinder living life.
If you find that there is someone that you know who has a problem with depression, young or old, that you make sure that you reach out to them and encourage them to become aware of their own condition. Once you have made their condition known to them, you may want to ask them if they would seek out medical help.

The bright yellow flower of the St Johns Wort (hypericum perforatum) with it’s
ray-like petals, represents the power of the sun that forces away the darkness.
This already points to the anti-depressant effects of the St Johns Wort which
are highly respected, even in conventional medicine.
St. John’s Wort, a perennial plant, has been used for hundreds of years to treat
depression, unrest and anxiety disorders as well as nerve pain. For a long time,
doctors and herbalists alike have known about its use as a sedative, but also as
treatment for wounds, burns, insect bites, stomach ulcers and more. It is still
used widely today and it’s effectiveness has been proven to a point where some
insurance companies are now covering the treatment.
It is not a powerful drug — when used to treat depression — in the sense of
bringing a quick recovery, but shows excellent long term results in many
patients. The herb assists body and soul in the healing process and helps to
build a solid foundation for a complete recovery.
St John’s Wort was tested in a double-blind study of 105 male and female
patients in the 20 to 64 year age group, suffering from mild to moderate
depression. They were divided into two groups and monitored over a period of
four weeks. One group were given 300mg of St Johns Wort extract three times
daily, and the other received a placebo. All of the patients had psychiatric
evaluations before the start of the study and after four weeks of treatment.
The results revealed that, 67% of the St Johns Wort group had responded
positively to the treatment without any adverse side effects whereas only 28%
of the placebo group showed any signs of improvement.
St Johns Wort is available as tea (flowers and leaves), liquid extracts and pills or
capsules. It is normally taken thrice daily and it will take one week or more to
notice any improvement in the condition.
Treatment can be continued for long periods of time as the herb does not
normally produce any side effects. But St Johns Wort can interact strongly with
other medication e.g. cancer and HIV drugs, contraceptive pills and others. So it
is vitally important to consult a medical specialist first before starting a course
of treatment.
One effect of St Johns Wort is, that it makes the skin more sensitive to light. It
is therefore important to keep out of the sun as much as possible while using
the herb.
There is growing evidence to suggest that St. Johns Wort is a safe and effective,
natural remedy for the treatment of mild to medium depression.

- Causes
There are several causes of manic depression. Here is a list of some of the causes that lead to manic depression:
a) Genetic factor
As discussed earlier, manic depression tends to run in families. Chromosomes tend to show genetic abnormalities.
b) Fast biological clock
Hypothalamus, the center of the brain shows a super fast biological ‘clock’. The clock is actually a small cluster of nerves known as the supra chiasmatic nucleus or SCN. This works towards regulating an individual’s daily cycle of life and affects waking and sleeping.
c) Neurotransmitters
Patients of manic depression are known to have higher levels of vesicular monoamine transporter. It is a protein inside the brain that’s known to regulate neurotransmitters.
Other causes include abnormal activity of brain and infectious agents such as viruses.
