Why do I love to teach English as a Second Language? Let me give you ten reasons (and ten paragraphs about why this should matter to you):

One: I love to teach.

Two: I love English.

Three: I love language in general; discovering the connections between English and other languages is a bonus.

Four: I love to hear other people speak their native languages fluently, easily, and beautifully.

Five: Im very patient and a good listener, and I love to practice things Im good at.

Six: I love to travelno, thats wrong. I dont travel. But spending time with people from other cultures enables me to imagine that I travel.

Seven: I love to feel like an ambassador towhatever country my student is from.

Eight: I love learning about history, and most other countries on the planet have more history than mine.

Nine: Im a writer; writing is my primary source of income, and I love to write. But writing is a solitary activity; teaching allows me to interact with people and adds another layer of richness to my life.

Ten: It gives me something wonderful to dream about. Please continue reading.

Why should you care that I love to teach ESL?

Here, in ten brief paragraphs, is my answer.

I tell my students, rather apologetically, that Americans generally dont respect people who dont speak English. (By the way, I dont say this until I sense they are thinking it.) Why dont we? True, the world is quickly becoming a global society, and English is becoming the international language. And perhaps someday soon every educated person in the world will have a working knowledge of English.

But how did we, as a nation, become so provincialso arrogantso smug? Even if your ancestors came here on the Mayfloweras mine didor even if they are Native Americans, your people originally spoke some other language. Modern English has been around only a few hundred years.

And what a tragedy it would be if those other languages disappeared, or became ancient relics of lost civilizations, to be studied only by academicians and never used in everyday life. Think of living in a world where everyone had the same favorite color, or the same hobbywhere every radio station played the same musicor every restaurant served the same food. How boring! Heres an easy (and fun) way for each of us to do our small part for international relations: be patient with someone who is learning English, and while were at it, show an interest in their native language. Were guaranteed to learn something fascinating.

Wherever we live, wherever our ancestors came from, our language is intimately intertwined with our history, our culture, our sociologyeven our biology. Consider that whatever sounds are absent from our native language, unless we somehow learn them as young children, will be lost to us forever. We lose a big piece of our cultural identity if we pretend that Modern English is the only language that counts.

Now, my dreamfor many years, Ive wanted to travel to England, Ireland, Scotland, and Walesthe lands of my ancestors. A few years ago, I began to study Italian, and became enamored of not only the language, but the food, the art, the architecture, and of course the history. Now I want to go to Italy.

More recently, as I worked with a student from Switzerland, I was soon awed by what I learned of the rich cultural history, the variety of natural scenerythe castles and cathedrals and trainsthe large number of language groups for so small a countryand now I want to go to Switzerland. Given enough time and experience, maybe eventually Ill want to go just about everywhere. But for starterswestern Europe.

So I dream that some day Ill be invited to stay with a familyperhaps a non-English-speaking family in an English-speaking country, or perhaps a family in Italy or Switzerlandand be a tutor and companion to the adults and/or the children in the family. While they learn English, Ill learn about their culture…and travel! And I will be a goodwill ambassador, an example of the generous spirit of America.

I hope all my fellow Americans will find it in themselves to appreciate the languages of the world and the people who speak them. If you do travel, please make an effort to say a few words in your host countrys language. You probably wont have to say much, for the people you meet will probably want to take the opportunity to practice English. But I believe they will appreciate the effort. If you dont travel, just look at the people around you and notice the diversity of backgrounds.

Can we believe that something good can come out of every bad thing that happens? The Old Testament story of the Tower of Babel describes Gods punishment of mankind for their pride in thinking they could reach heaven by building and climbing upon this great tower. Suddenly speaking many different languages, they could no longer communicate and were unable to finish the project. The good that has come to all of us because of it is this: we have the immeasurable treasure of thousands of languages, and the social, cultural, and natural diversity that go with them.

Go out of your way to spend some time with someone who doesnt speak fluent English. The joy of communication that transcends language barriers will be yours.

Stocks

Futures

Futures are traded along the same lines as stocks, but are purchased against the future cost of commodities. Index Trading

Groups of stocks based upon commodities or sectors of the market can be purchased and traded as an index; common indices include the diamond market, the gold market, technology sectors, healthcare, and other such groupings.

Trading on Margin

Trading on margin is similar to making stock trades with borrowed money… you can purchase the stock shares for a portion of the actual price, with the remainder due at a later date or upon sale of the stock. The broker which places the order must have your margin portion of the cost before placing the order, which is typically 50% of the cost of the stock.

Bull or Bear Market

Bull markets and bear markets are terms used to describe trends in the stock market. A bull market is one in which stocks continue to rise over an extended period of time, and is considered to be an optimistic market. A bear market is one in which stocks fall in price over an extended period of time, and is considered to be a pessimistic market.

Splits

Splits are a way that companies reduce the value of their individual stocks without reducing the value of their stocks as a whole. The most common type of split is a two-for-one split, in which each share of stock is divided into two shares… this doubles the total amount of shares, though the total amount invested remains the same and each individual share is worth one half of its previous value. Stockholders end up owning twice as many shares after a two-for-one split, though the total amount that they have invested remains the same.

If you understand how these three factors interact you will get a much better response from your advertising and marketing. However, if you ignore or de-value the importance of these three factors you will be settling for less money and lower responses. Before I get into how these factors work together I want to take a brief moment to explain what these terms mean.

Message. This one is the straightest forward of the three, and it generally refers to your sales message. These are the words you communicate to your prospect that are used to convince him / her to take action and buy your product or services. These are words used to sell, and they are often referred to as copy.

Medium. This area is one where entrepreneurs often make a mistake, especially when it comes to the internet. The medium is how your message gets to your prospect. Examples of different medium are: postcards, newsletters, TV, radio, business cards, sales letters, internet, tear sheets, free recorded messages, email, etc. The internet is tricky because everyone thinks that the rules change when they go online. That is dangerous thinking. The principles that make marketing work do not change and they apply regardless of what medium you are in. You may have to tailor your message to fit within a given format, but the rules are still the same.

Market. This term refers to your target market. That is to say, who are you trying to sell your product or services too. Obviously, you cant sell to every single person on the planet, so you have to pick a certain group or niche of people to market to. If you havent already tried this, you should sit down and write down every possible thing you could think of about your target market, and use this as a guide in your marketing. If you are marketing to everybody you are marketing to nobody.

These three factors work together and feed into one another. You must have the right message being delivered to the right market via the right medium. If any of these three factors is not right than it could sink an entire campaign. For instance if you are a swimwear provider you would have better success marketing to people in Florida than you would in Wisconsin. If you sell expensive jewelry you want to market to people in wealthier parts of town than those in the poorer parts.

You see, people learn and react in different ways. Some people like to read things, others like to listen to them, and still others like to learn things hands on. This means that you have to put your sales message in the best format for you target market to consume it. You dont want to send an email campaign to someone who hates to check email, or pay for TV commercials broadcast to people who dont watch television (believe it or not they still exist).

There are several good ways to avoid making these types of mistakes, and most of them involve doing a little research. Go and spend time wherever your target market spends time. Eat what they eat, watch what they watch, and do what they do. This will give you a much better understanding of your market. To figure out what media works best, you should look into what types of publications that your target market responds too. Find successful (the key word being successful) people that are marketing to your group and find out what they are using and copy it. Finally, a good catch-all way to improve your chances is by using campaigns that include multiple media. For instance, you could use a 3-step mailing campaign that includes a sales letter, CD, and voice broadcast.

I know that adapting your marketing to include this type of strategy may be difficult, but I assure you it is well worth the effort. If you dont concern yourself with all three aspects you are leaving money behind. If you apply these principles properly there is no question that you will see a boost in both your response and your bank account.
