Stocks - CC PP (Stocks - Covered Call Protective Put) Strategy We all know that trading stocks involves stress and risk. At the same time it can also be highly profitable. Trading can give the most return on investments as compared to other investment strategies including real estate. For example, savings, money market accounts or CDs may give a return of 2 to 5% at best. You may expect a 10% rate through mutual funds. However, under the current economic conditions, such a yield may be hard to come by even with a long term investment. Also, you do not have control over your investments and you can not be sure if your financial consultant either. What then is a low risk and more profitable alternative?

The purpose of this article is to illustrate one such low risk, high profit trading strategy, which combines stocks and options.

Covered calls and protective puts are enabled in most of the trading accounts by major brokers. (Ameritrade, Scottrade, E-trade, etc)

Covered call is you buy stocks and sell 1 call (contract) for every 100 stocks you buy/own.

Protective put is buy 1 put for every 100 stocks you own. In this strategy we buy a put which expires at least 6 months later.

When the stock price goes up, call price goes up and put price goes down. Elapsed time will have negative impact on put price.

Heres the Stocks - Covered Call Protective Put Strategy Look for an up-trending, optionable stock. For this example, lets call it XYZ. Lets assume XYZ stock is currently trading at $69 per share. Assume that currently we are in the first, second or third week of February. You buy 100 stocks of XYZ.

Next, you write a covered call on XYZ, at a strike price of 75, for March. This gives you an additional income, but you have an obligation of selling the stock, at $75. Say you get $150 from writing the covered call.

However, just because the stock is an up-trending one, and you have already made $150, you can not be 100% sure which direction the stock price might move. So, in this strategy, buy a put on XYZ for a strike price at 70 and expiration of 6 months+. In our case, buy the put for the month of August or later. Say this costs you $800. This gives you a right to sell the XYZ stock at a price of $70, even if it drops below 70 by August expiration. (For a real time example, as of this article date - Feb 2006, see JOYG with current price at ~55, and its option chain with strike price of 60. Its Oct 2006 put was available at ~6.5)

Scenarios: Lets consider some scenarios to illustrate how this can be a low risk, high profit strategy.

Scenario 1: By the March expiration date, if the XYZ stock price goes above $75, the stock will be called out. That means it will be sold from your account. Normally, stocks in the money by $0.25 will be automatically exercised.

Since the stock price has gone up, your put price will decrease. Since the put is in the future, its delta is low. You might be able to sell it for around $600. Higher the stock price goes, put price will decrease. You can wait for a good time to sell before its expiration. The net profit for 100 XYZ stocks can be calculated as follows:

Stock price sold stock price bought + premium received from covered call put price bought + put price sold.

i.e. 7500 6900 + 150 800 + 600 = 550. That is a return of 7.3% PER MONTH. Which translates to 87.6% per year.

Scenario 2: Stock price goes above 69, but remains below 75 by the March expiration. Here the call will expire worthless, and you get to pocket the premium received from writing the covered call. You can write another call for April for the same underlying stock XYZ, for which you may get $150 - $200. You can continue writing the covered calls until the protective put expires or you get called out. Your overall return could be 30% to 70% per year.

Scenario 3: In most trades, if the stock price drops, you lose money, but not here! Lets say, XYZ falls in value to $65 by March expiration date. If you had just traded only the stock, your portfolio would have decreased in value by $400. But, in our case, since you have the protective put, you can still sell the stock at $70, no matter how low the price drops.

If it is in later months, say April or May, you will have generated some income by writing covered calls. If the stock price goes down, there are two alternatives we can choose. Wait till the covered call expires for the month, or buy back the covered call. Before the protective put expires, you can either exercise the put, or sell the stock at current price. The protective put price goes up when the stock price drops. So you can sell the stock at the current price of 65 and sell the protective put at around 950.

Depending on the months elapsed, since you can write covered call each month, you will have made $200 - $600.

So, net for this scenario would be:

Stock price sold stock price bought + premium received from covered call from all months so far put price bought + put price sold.

i.e. 6500 6900 800 + 950 + 300 = 50. This will be just a breakeven, despite the stock price has gone down. If the stock price goes further down, there may be little bit more loss, but the maximum risk is the premium paid for the protective put minus money received from covered calls [minus/plus difference between the stock price and put strike price].

So, even if the stock price goes down, you will find yourself with a small profit or no loss or a very insignificant loss. You have, overall, a very good opportunity of cutting down your risks.

This strategy, in most cases, gives a good profit, and in rest of the cases, a very low risk. Thus, this is a high profit, low risk strategy. Practice the details and paper trade the strategy.

One of the two most common types of enclosures is the Response card, also known as an RSVP card, (French for Respondez, sil vous plait, or please respond). This card (with its pre-addressed and pre-stamped envelope), allows your guests to easily let you know if they will be coming.

The other most common enclosure is the Reception card. It gives them information on the time and location of the reception. If the ceremony and reception will be held at the same location, the Reception card can be omitted as long as reception information is also included on the invitation itself. Something along the lines of Reception immediately following ceremony will usually suffice and save you money.

Maps and directions are also popular enclosures. The easier you can make it for your guest to attend your wedding the better. Even if your guests live locally, a map with good directions is thoughtful and much appreciated.

One other common enclosure is hotel information If you have several out-of-town guests, an easy and inexpensive (doesnt cost you a dime!) courtesy is to book a block of rooms at a nearby hotel. Include the name of the event (ex. Smith-Jones Wedding), the hotels reservation phone number and room rates (hotels will often give a discount) on coordinating cardstock. Whether your guests choose to stay at this location is up to them, but youve conveniently and thoughtfully put the information right at their fingertips.

A less common enclosure is the Within the Ribbon card. This card, which is about the size of a business card, is not sent to every guest, but only to those particularly special friends and family members. This card is brought to the ceremony and shows the ushers that you and your fianc want to ensure that these special guests are seated up front. These cards are not necessary for grandparents or siblings, as they are traditionally seated up front, or for parents as they traditionally have the honor of sitting in the first row. Within the Ribbon cards are usually used for very large and very formal weddings where many guests are expected and reserving enough room for seating special friends and family members is a must.

The purpose of the invitation and its various enclosures is to provide all necessary information a guest will need to easily and comfortably attend your wedding and share in your celebration.

1. Face Your Fears. Make a list of the major problems in your life, then list ways to improve or change them. They are never really as bad as you think they are. Chances are that not all of your problems can be dealt with easily or quickly because they might involve others. But unless you change, no one else will, so it is still your responsibility to confront or address your problems. There will be some areas where you can take immediate action. Start with those, because resolving the smaller irritations will give you the satisfaction, the reinforcement and the courage to move on to the bigger ones.

2. Live in the Present. There is nothing happening back there. That door is firmly closed now because the past exists only inside our heads. Nowhere else. There is no harm in remembering fond memories which make you feel good, but ditch the nasty ones. Past activities are already history and we cant change history. We can only appreciate it, reminisce on it, assess it, analyse it or celebrate it. We have to accept it and look to the future, especially if we value our lives. Welcome change, make it work for you, even if, initially, you cant see its value. The change is going to happen with or without you, so you might as well help to pioneer it and set the trend rather than be left behind like a fossil harking back to past ways which are definitely outmoded and will never return.

3. Reach Out to Others. Find the courage to really open your heart to someone. Self-confidence is strongly related to trusting others because our deepest secrets are often not as hidden to others as we may think. Because we share the same environment and experiences, there will always be common threads linking our lives with that of others and, while we are unique, we are no more special than our family or peers. It is this desire to be perfect, to put ourselves above others, or to put ourselves down that breeds self-shame and keeps us being distrustful. We forget that everyone around us is just as human as ourselves and is likely to share our innermost secrets.

4. Loosen Up. If you have ever had a near death experience, you will immediately appreciate the value of this statement. Once our lives are in grave danger, everything else pales into insignificance. Suddenly, things that used to matter become trivial as our priorities change. Dont take life or yourself too seriously. Let your hair down and enjoy yourself sometimes. Dont look like a failure by being morose and gloomy. There is always someone worse off than you are. Above all, people dislike those who have no humour the stiff, starchy, jobsworth types, and those who are constantly negative. That attitude achieves nothing and keeps you feeling low.

If you want to scatter a crowd fast, just call in some miserable people! You only have to think of someone you know who is disabled, very ill, deprived or even dead, and that should put your own life in perspective; to show you how fortunate you are. Problems make you stronger if you strive to overcome them. That is the whole point of your resolve being tested by your circumstances. In fact, to overcome hurdles and survive is the essence of life. If you cant laugh at yourself, you will always be unhappy, which will reduce the positive aura around you. It is a futile desire to control our situation or to feel superior which often ends up making us feel like idiots!

5. Learn to be Assertive. That is, learn to express your feelings, opinions, beliefs and needs directly, openly and honestly, while being sensitive to the rights of others. Know what you want and ask for it. Thats the only way your dreams will come true. Just because you wish to express yourself to your boss or partner about something that might be bothering you, or could be sensitive, does not mean it will be automatically unacceptable. As long as you remember that you have the right to express your feelings and others have the right to accept or reject them, you should go for it. Often it is a selfish desire to impose our own rights and demands on others, without accepting their rights in the situation or interfering with their privacy which negatively affects our self-esteem.

Saying No to unreasonable requests is also a very good start to building confidence. Often childhood conditioning prevents us from actually refusing what others want, regardless of its effect on us. Additionally, talking about our fears or any misunderstanding with others builds more confidence than living in an unspoken, isolated and accusatory fashion.

Day 1
You wake up and go through your rather extensive phone book. There are exactly 1000 mobile numbers. After neatly dividing the stock in two equal parts, you start the rather laborious exercise of sending a message to the first 500 people - “Reliance will go up today” and to the other 500 people - “Reliance will go down today”. Your cost = 1000 rupees (Re.1 being the charge of an SMS)

Day 2
Another wonderful morning. You pick up the morning paper to find the Reliance stock to have shot up. You look to the skies, say a small pray for the people who got your prediction wrong and get about your work for the day. You divide the stock of 500 people who got the right tip into two parts. To one part (250) you sms - “Infosys is definitely up today” and to the remaining 250 - “Infosys is surely down today”. Your cost = 500 rupees (total cost = 1500)

Day 3
Infosys seems to have gone down today.. these cut in spends in the US are creating some havoc, you say and get down to business. 250 correct tips (for two days) get cut in 125 and 125. To one half, Wipro to go up and to the other, Wipro to go down. Cost for the day = 250 rupees

Day 4
125 is broken into 62/62. Now HLL is at stake, and you have me (the famous stock analyst) to give you your daily sms stock tip. Cost = 125; total cost = 1875

Day 5
By now these 62 people who got all 4 tips correct would be really going nuts. Some might have also invested using my tips while some others would be really scouting for some money because they now have this amazing stock analyst who gives correct predictions after another. Only this time it’s pay-back time. In return of these wonderful tips, I ask for a paltry sum of rupees 10 for the next tip. Let assume the 62 of them pay up 10 rupees. Thats a cost of 62 for me (for the sms) but an earning of 620 rupees. Total loss is now down to 1,317 rupees. Again we do the 31/31 split.

Day 6
31 is split as 16/16 (rounding off numbers here for illustration purposes). This time I charge a premium of 20 rupees because its 5 correct tips in a row.

Day 7, day 8, day 9 and day 10
16 = 8/8; 8= 4/4; 4=2/2; 2=1/1
Premiums also increase to 30, 40, 50 and 60 rupees. I am currently sitting on a cumulative profit of 362 rupees.

Day 11
Last day at work. I pick up my phone for a rather lackluster day, flip a coin and sms the one lonely fellow my tip of the day (boy, this guys must have gone real crazy by now)

At the end of 11 days of work I have a net PROFIT of 431 rupees.

Scenarios -
a) Had I started the share-tip collection in the fourth iteration itself, I would have made profit of 2921.
b) And if I had charged a premium of 10 rupees throughout from the fourth iteration - i would have gained 491 rupees.

The king of torts may ask - “Is it legal?”. Well what makes any aspect of this illegal? The people receiving the tip have a choice to act or not act on it. Consideration is being taken for a service rendered - i.e. pain-staking research of Indian equities.

When you’re out picking up women, it’s important to remember some very simple rules that will make sure your chances of picking up women will actually WORK, rather than get a drink thrown in your face.

You can never really know when a pickup is going to go well, but there are ways you can prepare. So here’s some steps for success BEFORE you go out picking up women!

When you go to a place where you know there will be attractive women, make the decision that you’re actually going to pick them up!

Too often, guys will go out with no real goal in mind. And guess what? When you have no outcome in mind - you’ll usually end up with NOTHING.

But if you go out with a specific goal, your chances of achieving that goal go up DRAMATICALLY.

It doesn’t matter if it’s as simple as “Talk To One Woman Tonight,” or as ambitious as “Get Two Women To Come Home For A Threesome.”

As long as you have a goal, your chances of picking up a girl will increase substantially.

You don’t even have to be GOING OUT to pick up women. Maybe you’re visiting a food court in mid-afternoon because you’re feeling hungry, and you know you’ll spot at least one attractive woman there who you could see later.

You may or may not succeed in your quest, but you’re much more likely to have a positive outcome if you go with the mindset that you can pull off a successful pickup.

Always take a pen and paper, or at least your cell phone, wherever you go. You’ll need it for when you exchange numbers with women. Be sure to keep a condom with you, too, just in case! Knowing that you have protection on hand is just one more thing that will keep you from chickening out.

Remember: Do Not Give Yourself An Excuse NOT To Pick Up Women!

The more reason you give yourself NOT to do something, the harder it will be to do.

That is why you simply need to mentally prepare yourself for the pickup. NO EXCUSES!

Visualize a positive outcome. Focus on all you have to offer a girl. Be fun, friendly, and open. But most importantly - TALK TO HER!

Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. Even if you have a “bad feeling” or are nervous, just think of it as a “practice run” to help get you warmed up.

Know your environment. When you meet a girl you like, you’ll want to get together with her soon preferably the same day, while her attraction for you is still high. Be aware of good places nearby where you can “bounce” to, like bars, coffee houses, lounges, art galleries, or other fun place where you and your “target” can have a change of scenery.

You’ll want to go to a place that’s low-key enough so you can get to know each other better. When you bounce from one location to another, it’s like you’re going on another date. Why wait for another week to pass by to take her on another date so you can build comfort with her, when you know you can do it on the same day?

Have a place in mind where you can become intimate with her. If you live nearby and you can bring her home, so much the better.

Have an excuse to take her home that has nothing to do with sex. You can have a DVD that she’s never seen but has to see, or an exotic drink she’s never tried, or some photos you’ve taken of a place where you’ve been that she’s never seen. Or you can play her a song that you’ve written. It doesn’t matter, as long as it makes her comfortable enough to come over!

Remember that the whole point of picking up women is to build trust, comfort, and attraction all at the same time. If any of those three qualities are missing, your pickup may very well fail. So be sure not to neglect any of them!
